Twenty-five Fields Medallists sign "A Severe Misalignment of AI in Mathematics", published on Terence Tao's blog
On September 11 Tao posted a declaration he co-signed as one of 25 initial Fields Medallist signatories, spanning Pierre Deligne (1978) to Yu Deng (2026), including Scholze, Viazovska, Kontsevich, Hairer, Maynard, Bhargava, Huh, Birkar, Avila, Figalli and Duminil-Copin. Its argument is that labs are rewarded for benchmarks, speed and publicity while mathematics depends on verification, attribution and the human transmission chain, and that "solving problems is only a tool and proxy for achieving the primary goal of conceptual understanding and insight." It names rushed announcements with no writeup as raising "severe attribution and plagiarism questions" and warns rapid AI problem-solving "could destroy fertile ground instead of breathing life into new ideas."
