Signal's numberless registration lands in commits, using zkgroup credentials and a paid-login step
The long-running community thread surfaced greyson-signal's 2 September commits adding the ability to register and log into a numberless account with a new zkgroup credential, followed by an 'ability to pay for a signal login' commit on 9 September. Signal already uses zero-knowledge proofs for donation badges, backup payments, groups and username character-set verification, so this extends existing machinery rather than introducing new cryptography. The paid-login commit is the detail nobody has explained yet, and it drew 324 points on Hacker News.
