The UN Put Its Statistics Behind an MCP Server and Made Google's Data Commons the Read Layer for Agents
Google and the UN system launched the UN System Data Commons at data.un.org on September 17, an open-source knowledge graph unifying statistics from across UN entities and exposed over Model Context Protocol so agents can query authoritative figures directly instead of scraping PDFs. Twenty-six UN entities have committed, nearly 20 contributed data at launch, the target is 80% of UN statistical datasets by end of 2027, and Google.org put in $2M to fund independent long-term operation. For builders, this is the pattern to copy: the institution that publishes an MCP endpoint becomes the default source agents cite, and the data-resale vendors sitting between it and the user lose their reason to exist.
