OpenAI proposes a US-led international standards effort covering recursive self-improvement and incident reporting
In a September 21 post titled 'Building standards for the next phase of AI,' OpenAI asked Washington to coordinate national AI safety institutes and standards bodies on shared methods for measuring capabilities, testing safeguards, overseeing recursive self-improvement and reporting incidents. The proposal names no participating governments, gives no timetable and sets no penalties, and it leaves enforcement to national governments. It lands the same week as the 20-nation oversight call, which gives Washington a lab-backed alternative to a UN body.
