Stanford confirms its housing and dining office used generative AI to swap a student's race and gender in an ad
The Stanford Review reported on September 21 that Residential & Dining Enterprises altered a 2024 dining-hall photo. It replaced student Billy Ramirez '27 with an AI-generated Black woman, slimmed two other students' faces and redrew their clothing as Stanford merchandise. On September 23 the Stanford Daily reported that PR director Charlene Gage confirmed the edit and said both the alteration and the lack of disclosure violate Stanford's AI policy, which 'strictly prohibits' AI alteration of images of Stanford people. It is a concrete case of an institution's own written AI policy failing to stop a marketing team.
