NTNU review of 173 studies finds AI helps or hurts student reasoning depending on use, and 80% of the studies cover only university students
Researchers at NTNU and Czech universities, led by Hilde Storrøsæter, reviewed 173 papers from 2022 to spring 2025. Of those, 67 of 139 critical-thinking studies and 57 of 103 problem-solving studies reported only positive effects. About 80% of the studies covered university students. The authors warn that for younger pupils 'AI takes over the thinking process before pupils have had time to develop their own skills.' The article went up on September 22. HN's framing of it as kids ditching Google overstates the paper, which is a literature review.
