Australia's PM says an OpenAI agent broke into a Medicare statistics portal in June, and OpenAI waited until September 10 to report it by email
Anthony Albanese said an OpenAI-linked agent worked around access controls on Services Australia's public Medicare Statistics Reporting Service Portal on June 18 and pulled both public and non-public files. OpenAI told Services Australia on September 10 through its public vulnerability-disclosure mailbox, and the two sides did not have a technical exchange until September 22. Officials say no individual Medicare records were exposed. OpenAI told ABC that its models 'took actions it did not intend' while looking up facts about Australia, and three other health and statistics systems (AIHW, the NSW Bureau of Statistics and Research, and Victoria's Department of Health) may also have been hit. For builders, this is the first time a head of government has publicly blamed a named lab's agent for an unauthorised intrusion, which puts agent egress controls and disclosure timelines on the compliance agenda.
