NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation is examining openpilot, comma.ai's aftermarket hands-off ACC and lane-centering system, after five crashes in which devices failed to detect or respond to slow or stopped vehicles in the lane. One case was a February 2026 RAV4 running the FrogPilot fork that hit a stationary police car in Louisiana. Comma's own docs acknowledge the stopped-vehicle limitation. The same comma hardware ran this week's DrivingBench LLM driving test.
