Gary Marcus asks Trump to offer Xi joint US-China cancer and cybersecurity research instead of an AI slowdown deal
Marcus on AI (Gary Marcus)·low signal
In a September 23 open letter ahead of the Trump-Xi AI meeting, Marcus proposes modeling a deal on Cold War space and smallpox cooperation, in place of a slowdown Trump won't sign. He cites Chinese state media calling AI 'a new frontier for China-US cooperation'. In his post the same day on the UN session he says all four speakers converged on preflight testing, transparency audits, liability and global dialogue, and that 'there is no excuse not to start implementing them'. It is an unusual turn from Marcus, who is usually the critic, toward pitching a deal both governments could accept.
