Anthropic says Claude computed the nine-loop six-particle amplitude in N=4 super Yang-Mills from one prompt, and SLAC's Lance Dixon checked it
A September 25 post on Anthropic's science blog, written by physicist Matt von Hippel, says Claude beat the eight-loop record that Dixon and Andy Liu set in 2023. It used both the bootstrap method and an indirect form-factor approach and delivered the result 'in a single shot, without any scientific oversight' after Anthropic physicists Liam Fitzpatrick and Siddharth Mishra-Sharma set the challenge in late August. The compute was about a week on 96 CPUs, at a cost Anthropic puts at $1,000-$2,000. Von Hippel's conclusion is that a lot of frontier physics is blocked on heavy engineering rather than new ideas, and that is work agents can already do.
