Fireship: Linux Distros Blocking Brazil and California Over Age Verification Laws — MidnightBSD Bans Users Entirely
Fireship's video (695K views) covers the escalating conflict between Linux distributions and new age verification laws in Brazil (Lei 15.211, effective March 17) and California (AB 1043, effective Jan 1 2027). MidnightBSD updated its license to ban residents of Brazil and California entirely. A community-maintained 32-bit fork blocked Brazilian and California IPs the day Lei 15.211 took effect. Canonical is having lawyers review; Omarchy Linux rejected compliance outright. The laws require operating systems to implement age verification for minors with fines up to 10% of Brazilian revenue (~$9.5M) per infraction.
