Micron Reportedly Planning HBM-Style GDDR Stack — Cheaper AI Accelerator Memory Between GDDR and HBM
Micron is developing vertically stacked GDDR memory targeting AI accelerators that need more bandwidth than standard GDDR but don't require full HBM-class packaging. Early versions may use ~4 layers with samples arriving in 2027. The design would create a new memory tier between $5/GB GDDR and $25/GB HBM, potentially enabling a class of AI accelerators significantly cheaper than H100/B200 for inference workloads. For local LLM builders, this could mean future consumer GPUs with HBM-like bandwidth at near-GDDR pricing.
