Anthropic Cuts Off Claude Subscriptions for Third-Party Tools Like OpenClaw, Effective Today
Starting April 4, 2026 at 12pm PT, Anthropic will no longer allow Claude subscribers to use their subscription limits for third-party agentic tools like OpenClaw, citing unsustainable compute demand. Boris Cherny, Head of Claude Code, stated subscriptions 'weren't built for the usage patterns of these third-party tools.' Users must now use pay-as-you-go 'extra usage' billing or the API directly, with Anthropic offering a one-time credit equal to one month's subscription redeemable by April 17 and up to 30% discounts on pre-purchased usage bundles.
