CROSS-CATEGORY: Three Competing Agent Payment Protocols Now Live — Stripe MPP vs Google UCP vs Visa TAP
Three competing standards for AI agent payments are now live simultaneously: Stripe/Tempo's Machine Payments Protocol (MPP) with stablecoin and card support via Visa's Acceptance Platform, Google's Universal Commerce Protocol, and Visa's Trusted Agent Protocol. Visa released a card-based MPP SDK enabling merchants and acquirers to accept payments from autonomous agents, while Stripe expanded support to include Mastercard Agent Pay and BNPL methods like Affirm and Klarna. The payments infrastructure for agentic commerce is fragmenting into competing standards before the market has materialized — Morgan Stanley data shows only 1% of consumers currently purchase via agents.
