VS Code Ships Copilot Autopilot: Approval-Free Autonomous Agent Execution in Public Preview
GitHub's April 8 VS Code release ships Autopilot mode (public preview), a permission level beyond the existing default and bypass-approval tiers. Autopilot auto-approves all tool calls, automatically retries errors, auto-responds to questions, and continues working autonomously until task completion — no human-in-the-loop required. Enabled by default in Insiders, opt-in via chat.autopilot.enabled in Stable. Also includes integrated browser debugging and image/video support in agent chat. This is the most aggressive autonomy setting shipped by any major IDE.
