UK Admits 100x Underestimate of AI Data Centre Carbon Emissions
The UK government revised its AI data centre emissions estimate upward by 87,000% to 136,000%, now projecting 34–123 megatonnes of CO2 by 2035 (up to 3.4% of UK total emissions), The Guardian reported April 24. The previous estimate — since deleted — claimed a maximum of 0.142M tonnes per year. The correction followed an investigation by Foxglove and Carbon Brief showing the original figures were dramatically wrong.
