OpenAI CEO Altman Apologizes to Tumbler Ridge — Failed to Escalate Shooter's ChatGPT Account to Canadian Police
Sam Altman published a letter saying he is 'deeply sorry' that OpenAI failed to alert law enforcement about a mass shooter's ChatGPT account that was banned in June 2025 — eight months before the February 2026 attack that killed 8 people including 6 children at a school in Tumbler Ridge, BC. British Columbia Premier David Eby called the apology 'necessary, and yet grossly insufficient.' OpenAI is now being sued by a Tumbler Ridge family alleging the company had specific knowledge of the shooter's long-range planning.
