Scalar quantization to int8 gives ~4x compression for ~1% recall loss, binary quantization shrinks 32x. Both work with HNSW on Pinecone, Weaviate, Qdrant, and pgvector. Quantize before sharding or buying RAM, the recall hit is usually recovered by your reranking stage anyway.
