The beta workbench links 60-plus science databases and offers up to $30,000 in credits, with applications due July 15.
Why now: OpenAI shipped a competing computational-biology tool the same week, and Anthropic's credit applications for biology projects close July 15.
Anthropic shipped Claude Science this week, a beta workbench for macOS and Linux that acts as a project manager across more than 60 scientific databases.
The tool "is not a new AI model and not a more capable model for biology," per Anthropic. It runs on existing models, including Opus 4.8, with no special access underneath.
It renders 3D protein structures, genome browser tracks, and chemistry drawings next to the code that generated them, for Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise users. Selected biology projects can also get up to $30,000 in Claude credits plus $2,000 in Modal compute.
The same week, OpenAI shipped GeneBench-Pro for computational-biology agents, putting two AI-for-science tools in front of scientists within days of each other.
That's the real news: admitting a launch runs on an existing model, not a smarter one, is rare enough to remember when either company overclaims. Applications for the biology credits close July 15.
