Project Mariner is already driving real websites for AI Ultra subscribers, and Google is aiming for 200 million devices by year end.
Why now: The rollout matters now because it just moved auto browse from a browser feature to a phone-level default.
Google shipped auto browse as an Android feature on Pixel 10 and Galaxy S26 in late June, per No Hacks. That's a default-on AI browsing agent in front of a stated 200 million devices by year end. It turns prompt injection from a research problem into a phone-scale one.
Project Mariner is already driving real websites for AI Ultra subscribers, which shows the same category of agent working outside Google's own OS push too.
Anthropic's computer-use research preview arrived about 15 months ago. Since then, browser agents have gone from that preview to sitting inside the world's most used browser and mobile operating system.
Builders should treat a default-on, OS-level browsing agent as coming infrastructure. It inherits the prompt-injection and permission risks already documented against browser agents, just at phone scale. Once auto browse runs by default on 200 million phones, the first widely reported prompt-injection incident stops being hypothetical.
The rollout matters now because it just moved auto browse from a browser feature to a phone-level default.
