Why now: GitHub Copilot switched to usage-based AI Credits June 1, and Vercel's changelog now shows the same per-token model.
Vercel swapped its coding agent's flat $0.30-per-request fee for $0.25 per million tokens and dropped the pre-paid wallet system, per its changelog.
The old model charged $0.30 flat per request no matter how much work the agent did. The new one prices by consumption: $0.25 per million tokens, whether that's a quick fix or a long multi-file session.
Developers no longer pre-load credits or track a separate balance, and billing now tracks what the agent does instead of how many times it's called. That's the number anyone pricing an agent product needs to watch.
GitHub Copilot made the same shift on June 1, moving from a flat subscription tier to usage-based AI Credits. Vercel's changelog doesn't say when its own pricing change went live, only that the wallet model is gone.
Per-request and flat pricing for coding agents is dying. Metered token pricing is winning, per SaaStr's stealth-churn thesis on AI subscription pricing. If other agent vendors don't make the same switch soon, this is two companies, not an industry shift.
