Notion Shuts Down Mail as Agents Take Over

Notion retired Mail on June 25, the same week Slackbot's MCP client became an orchestration layer for chat and Claude Tag put a persistent agent inside channels, per TechCrunch.

That's three products in three different categories, email, chat, and dev tooling, making the same concession at once. When an agent sits between a person and the app, the interface stops being the thing people touch every day. Notion spent years building an inbox. Slack spent years building a chat client people live in. Both are admitting the agent behind the glass matters more than the glass itself.

The moat that's dissolving

Feature depth and design polish used to be what companies charged for. If the agent does the reading, sorting, and replying, a user doesn't need to see the surface. They need the agent to have access to it instead. Slackbot's MCP client works this way. It doesn't add features to the chat window. It lets an outside agent reach in and act on Slack directly. Claude Tag does the same thing with a standing presence in a channel instead of a one-off command.

Whichever product gives its agent the most room to act wins the next round, not whichever one has the nicest inbox. Notion conceded its own inbox couldn't win that fight. It shut Mail down rather than keep polishing a surface fewer people were going to look at directly.
