AI price wars are pushing margin toward chipmakers over model makers, and Nvidia's record close proves it.
Why now: The record close landed the same day speculation about a Kyber shipping delay, the one near-term threat to that thesis, got dismissed.
Nvidia closed above $5 trillion in market value, the first company ever to do it, per The Motley Fool. That milestone lands as AI model prices keep falling, with Grok priced at $2 and $6 and Sonnet undercutting Opus. Every price cut compresses margin at the model layer, and that margin doesn't vanish, it moves upstream to whoever sells the compute.
The close landed near $5.11 trillion, according to the report. Nvidia held those gains even after chatter about a delay to its next-generation Kyber rack-scale systems got dismissed.
That number caps a run that had the stock touching $5.5 trillion intraday back in May, per the same report. Round-tripping from a May intraday high to a July close above $5 trillion isn't a straight line up. The report doesn't say what drove the dip in between, or how close the stock came to slipping under $5 trillion along the way.
The bet baked into a $5 trillion valuation is that this stays a one-supplier market long enough to matter. Kyber slipping would have been the first crack in that bet. That's probably why the market cared enough to dismiss the delay speculation the same day the stock closed at a record. Watch what happens to this multiple the day a rack-scale competitor ships at comparable performance. That's the actual risk to the thesis, not a few weeks of schedule noise.
