Anthropic proposed a roughly $10 billion compute deal to Meta in June, the New York Times reported. Meta shares dropped about 6% intraday on the report before closing down 2%. The proposal is structured as monthly payments over two years, with an exit clause either side can use.
The offer sits next to Anthropic's other big compute bet: a $45 billion, three-year GPU deal with SpaceX signed in May. Meta is still reviewing the Anthropic proposal.
The odd part is who's on the other end of the deal. Meta would be selling Anthropic compute capacity while running Llama as a direct competitor to Anthropic's models.
The NYT report doesn't say why Anthropic needs Meta's GPUs on top of the SpaceX commitment. It also doesn't explain how Meta squares renting capacity to a rival with its own model line. That gap matters more than the price tag until one side confirms the terms.
The arrangement only makes sense if Meta's compute buildout has outpaced what Llama needs right now. Watch whether Meta confirms the terms or lets the deal die quietly in review. A denial would say the reputational risk of supplying a rival isn't worth the revenue.
