The same release splits GPT-5.6 into three cost tiers, Sol, Terra, and Luna, letting teams trade capability for speed by task.
Why now: Ten days after the July 9 merge, tier habits are still forming, before defaults calcify around whichever tier ships pre-selected.
OpenAI folded its standalone Codex app into ChatGPT desktop on July 9, per the company's changelog.
Codex keeps its own mode next to Chat and Work. Anyone running agentic coding sessions no longer needs a separate app to review a diff or merge a pull request.
The merged app adds inline diff editing and a side panel for pull request review. It also brings faster Computer Use automation on GPT-5.6, plus support for working across multiple repositories in one project.
GPT-5.6 also splits into three tiers with this release. Sol targets complex coding and security work. Terra and Luna trade capability for cost, with Luna the fastest and cheapest of the three.
OpenAI's split mirrors the tiering discipline Anthropic already pushed onto its own users: pick a tier by task, not by habit.
The changelog doesn't say how pricing compares across the three tiers, so it's hard to know yet how much a routing habit actually saves.
