Coding benchmarks still trail GPT-5.6, and Google registered two stopgap Flash model names to hold the field.
Why now: 9to5Google's report landed July 16, and as of July 19 Gemini 3.5 Pro still has no announced launch date.
Google's Gemini 3.5 Pro has missed its third launch deadline, slipping past July 17 with no new date, according to Bloomberg-sourced reporting relayed by 9to5Google.
That's the third delay since an original June target, and it matters for anyone weighing Gemini against GPT-5.6 for coding. Google's flagship still hasn't closed that gap, and now it doesn't even have a date to aim for.
The reason is code. Coding benchmarks for the model still trail OpenAI's GPT-5.6, per the reporting. A retraining data refresh aimed at closing that gap came up short. The same reporting flags hallucination and output-consistency problems on top of the benchmark miss.
While the flagship stalls, Google has registered model names for a Gemini 3.6 Flash and a 3.5 Flash Light. Nothing has shipped under either name yet, but the filings read like a stopgap, something to point to while Pro isn't ready.
Registering placeholder Flash model names while the Pro release keeps slipping shows Google buying time on a coding gap with GPT-5.6 it still hasn't closed. Watch whether either Flash variant ships before Pro does. That would confirm it's cover instead of a coincidence.
The delay became public through 9to5Google's July 16 report. As of July 19, Gemini 3.5 Pro still has no date attached.

Gemini 3.6 Flash launched July 21 at $1.50/1M in, $7.50/1M out, claiming 17% fewer output tokens than 3.5 Flash, DeepSWE code precision up from 37% to 49%, OSWorld-Verified computer use at 83% (from 78.4%), and a knowledge cutoff finally moved from January 2025 to March 2026....
GPT-5.6 Luna went to $0.20 input / $1.20 output per million tokens on July 30. That's an 80% cut. Terra dropped 20%. Luna's input now undercuts Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite ($0.25/$1.50) and sits at one-fifth of Claude Haiku 4.5's $1 input. Simon Willison covered the announcement and...
Google's Gemini 3.2 Flash appeared in the Gemini iOS app and AI Studio before any official announcement. It showed up on LM Arena benchmarks. And the numbers are real: 92% of GPT-5.5's coding and reasoning performance with sub-200ms latency at roughly 1/15th the cost. Source:...
Google pushed Flash to general availability and rolled out Gemini in Chrome (Windows/Mac for AI Pro/Ultra in the US), Gemini Omni globally to subscribers 18+, and a US Daily Brief (Google Gemini). The Flash GA is the builder-relevant piece: frontier-ish quality at speed and pr...
"Gemini is Cooked but GCP is Cooking" argues Google quietly shelved 3.5 Pro, which industry chatter placed at roughly Opus 4.5 level, shipping Gemini 3.6 Flash as a bridge the authors call worse than Muse Spark 1.2, Grok 4.5, and tier-1 Chinese open-source models. The hard num...
As of July 10, Google's default search returns an AI-written answer with inline citations, and the ten blue links (the norm since ~1998) now appear below the fold or not at all (Tech Times). Google reports publisher clicks down 58%. If your product or content depends on organi...
