Altman put the critic in front of 200 staffers himself, and OpenAI hasn't said what changed since.
Why now: The Verge's report on the internal talk appeared in July 19 coverage of OpenAI's internal culture.
Sam Altman asked novelist Dave Eggers to address 200 OpenAI employees directly, per The Verge.
Eggers used the room to argue that ChatGPT is suppressing an entire generation's written voice. That's the sharpest available critique of the product those 200 employees build every day, aimed at users far beyond OpenAI's walls.
That argument isn't new. What's new is who put it in front of the room.
The detail that matters isn't the argument. It's that Altman, running the company under critique, chose to invite that critic in himself. He didn't have to answer an op-ed or a podcast after the fact.
That's a managed gesture, not intellectual openness. If Altman wanted the real thing, the follow-through would show up somewhere: a product change, or a public response that engages Eggers's specific claim. The Verge's report shows none of that, and it doesn't say how the 200 employees in the room reacted either.
