Fetching from the wire…

The deal closed July 15 and folds planning, coding, and debugging agents into VS Code, JetBrains, and the command line.
Why now: The July 21 coverage pairs Anaconda's purchase with Vercel's homegrown Eve and Sandbox, sharpening the buy-versus-build contrast.
Anaconda bought Kilo Code on July 15, adding planning, coding, and debugging agents across VS Code, JetBrains, and the CLI, per AI Apps.
Anaconda's whole business rests on being the default Python environment for enterprises and universities. That distribution moat is worth very little if the agent layer belongs to someone else instead of running inside Anaconda's own tools.
Kilo Code isn't a plugin bolted onto notebooks. It runs planning, coding, and debugging directly in the editors developers already have open. No new app to install, no context to lose.
The more interesting signal is what Anaconda chose not to do. Vercel built its own agent, Eve, and its own execution layer, Sandbox, with its own engineers. Anaconda skipped the build and wrote a check instead. Different route, same conclusion: whoever owns a developer's default environment now needs to own the agent running inside it.
