Andrew Ng says automating code promotes everyone into senior work

Andrew Ng says automating code production promotes every developer into senior-level work, in his July 17 Batch letter.

The claim: once an agent handles the actual code, what's left is architecture decisions and product requirement scoping, the work senior engineers already do.

Ng ties this to a July 10 letter. There, he defined agentic coding loops as "an agent that keeps working until it satisfies a condition, such as achieving a product specification."

Put together, the two letters make a specific claim. The scarce skill in AI-assisted development isn't writing code, it's writing the condition an agent has to satisfy.

That tracks with what I run into daily in my own projects. The hard part isn't getting an agent to produce code. It's specifying "done" precisely enough that the agent can't satisfy the spec while missing the point.

That's a real skill gap, and it's not the one most AI coding tools are built around. Autocomplete and codegen tools optimize for typing speed. None of them help you write a spec tight enough to survive an agent hunting the shortest path to "satisfied," not the one you meant.
