Fetching from the wire…

The new complaint covers recordings a judge blocked Sony from adding to its first case against the AI music startup.
Why now: Sony filed the new suit July 20, three weeks after a June 29 ruling shut the door on adding these recordings to its existing case.
Sony Music filed a second lawsuit against Udio on July 20, covering 30,117 sound recordings starting with Elvis Presley's "Hound Dog," per The Verge.
That number matters beyond the count. Sony found the recordings through audio fingerprinting during discovery into Udio's training data, which surfaced hundreds of thousands of Sony recordings overall. A judge blocked Sony from adding these to its first case on June 29. This second suit tests whether a discovery haul that large can spawn suit after suit against the same defendant.
The complaint leans on the court's own language. Plaintiffs may pursue all infringed works, the ruling said, but "there is no requirement that it be done in [that] lawsuit."
For Udio, and any AI music company mid-litigation, this raises the ceiling on how many suits one training dataset can produce. One discovery process, potentially unlimited complaints, each with its own damages clock and its own pressure to settle.
The Verge's report doesn't say whether Sony plans more suits beyond these 30,117 recordings, or whether Udio has responded to the new filing.
