It's the seventh startup funded to chase agent payments, joining Google, OpenAI, Stripe, Mastercard and Ant International in a crowded field.
Why now: Natural's $30 million raise closed July 20, a month after Adyen hedged across three rival protocols on June 16.
Forerunner led a $30 million Series A into Natural on July 20, funding a seventh company chasing the agent payments protocol, per TechStartups. Any startup building checkout for AI agents has to pick one of those specs, or build for all seven.
Natural says it's building "the transactional plumbing required for AI agents." It joins six existing specs. Google has UCP and AP2, and OpenAI has ACP. Stripe and Tempo have MPP, with Visa as design partner. Ant International has AMP, and Mastercard has Agent Pay for Machines.
Adyen didn't wait for one to win. On June 16 it shipped a three-layer API suite: Agentic Feed, Agentic Cart, and Agentic Payments. The suite works with Meta's AI checkout and supports UCP, ACP, and AP2 at once.
A processor doesn't ship a protocol-agnostic abstraction layer if it expects one format to win outright. Adyen's move, a month before Natural's raise, reads like a bet that fragmentation is permanent, not temporary.
If you're building AI agent checkout, that's the lesson that predates the funding news: build against the abstraction layer, not any single protocol. Whichever of the seven specs wins, or if none do, the processors already picked their strategy.
