GitHub Copilot bills list API rates for the models running underneath it, per a comparison GitHub published itself. With the token price gap gone, GitHub's pitch has moved past price entirely. What you're paying for is the coding workflow, the policy controls, and the harness engineering GitHub wraps around the model, not the token.

That's a confident thing for a vendor to publish. GitHub is telling potential customers, in effect, don't expect to save money by going raw. What you'd be trading away is the workflow tooling and the guardrails GitHub already built. Building your own version of those is the actual cost of going it alone.

I've built my own harness for my personal projects, and GitHub's framing is closer to right than most vendor comparisons. The workflow and policy layer is where the real engineering happens, not the API call. It's also a bigger lift than a blog post makes it sound, the kind of work that never shows up in a pricing table.

But that cuts both ways. Pay GitHub and you get their workflow, their controls, their defaults. Build it yourself and it's slower and probably rougher at first. But it's yours, tuned to how your team actually works instead of how GitHub assumes everyone works.
