Why now: GitHub shipped this July 23, as sandbox-by-default with an explicit first-run opt-in becomes standard across CLI coding agents rather than a buried setting.
GitHub added a first-run prompt to Copilot CLI asking users to opt into its default sandbox, per the company's July 23 update. Sandboxing used to run quietly in the background. Now it's something a user has to see and accept before the tool touches a single shell command.
That matters because Copilot CLI runs commands directly on the machine it's installed on. Turning that into an explicit prompt, instead of a setting buried in preferences, changes what a user has actually agreed to.
The same release adds gemini-3.6-flash as a model option, plus fixes to session handling, shell behavior, planning and MCP setup. Smaller repairs cover upload retries, environment-variable preservation and oversized image handling, the paper cuts that build up in a daily-use tool.
Enterprise admins get a Copilot metrics impact dashboard covering adoption depth, usage cohorts and trends.
That dashboard is for whoever signs the Copilot renewal, not the developer running commands in the terminal. Watch whether GitHub's next release notes lead with admin tooling ahead of developer-facing features. That ordering will say which audience GitHub is actually building for.
