A 609-comment Hacker News thread read a proposed AI safety testing regime as a cost wall, per the top-voted reply. The top comment puts compliance at $100 million or more. That's high enough to leave only already-funded frontier labs able to ship legally. Smaller labs lose access to large markets regardless of what their models can do.
Commenters also challenged the assumption that closed models are inherently safer. They pointed to GPT-6, a closed model, as implicated in the Hugging Face incident, while GLM-5.2, an open-weights model, was used in the response. To them, that undercuts the case for keeping frontier models closed.
Defenders answered with a pharma and aviation comparison. Dangerous capabilities are harder to catch in an open model after release than in a closed system a company still controls.
Whoever sets the final compliance number decides which argument wins by default. A price close to what a well-funded mid-size lab can absorb undercuts the moat claim. A price only a handful of companies can afford proves it.
