Huang's letter defends distillation as legitimate, two days after the White House accused Moonshot of copying Fable to build K3.
Why now: K3's weights went public July 27, three days after Huang's letter, turning paragraph nine into cover instead of philosophy.
Huang's letter spends its ninth paragraph defending distillation, according to a read from paddo.dev. He calls it "a widely used technique for model improvement."
The paragraph also urges policymakers against "conflating legitimate model development techniques with misappropriation." That framing matters here: NVIDIA sells chips to whoever trains open models, so a crackdown on distillation threatens its own market too.
The letter landed two days after the White House accused Moonshot of covertly distilling Anthropic's Fable to build its K3 model. K3's weights went public three days later, on July 27.
His incentive, to Axios: "If there's great AI, even if it's open, wherever it comes from, there will be more use...you'll have to sell a lot more NVIDIA computers."
Yes, but a Moonshot engineer's rebuttal on Reddit puts Fable's release on July 1 and K3's launch on July 15, a gap experts call implausible.
Huang isn't defending a principle here. He's pre-defending Moonshot, and his incentive holds no matter which lab gets caught distilling next. Capable open models still need NVIDIA chips to run, whoever builds them. Watch whether NVIDIA makes the same argument the next time a lab gets accused.
