The Verge reports that The Atlantic's searchable database of works used to train AI models became the discovery mechanism for a wave of artist litigation: writers looked up their own names, found their work, and lawyered up against Google, Meta, and Anthropic. Some suits are now succeeding. The mechanism is the lesson. Making training-set membership individually checkable converted a diffuse grievance into thousands of named plaintiffs with documented standing.
