OpenAI alone drives nearly 40 percent of citations, but just eight of its 4,500 employees authored five or more papers.
Why now: The preprint posted July 16, and the analysis had reached 517 points on Hacker News by July 30.
Over half of AI's billion-dollar startups have never led a research paper, per a Science analysis of a July 16 preprint. OpenAI alone accounts for nearly 40% of citations in the dataset. Only eight of its roughly 4,500 employees have authored five or more qualifying papers.
That's the company most linked to AI research. Its citation share rests on eight authors, not a research staff sized to match. That's a problem for anyone using paper counts to size up how much real research a lab does. For everyone else in the dataset, the picture is thinner: most billion-dollar AI companies have never taken the lead on a paper at all.
The reason is structural, not cultural. A drug or chemical process can be patented after disclosure. An AI technique generally can't, so publishing one just hands it to whoever reads the paper next, including a better-funded rival.
The analysis counts lead-author roles only. It doesn't say whether these companies publish more often as junior or supporting co-authors, just that taking the lead is rare.
