All roughly 200 Anyscale employees move to Nscale, which builds its own data centers and generates its own power.
Why now: Nscale announced the deal July 30, with Ray's October move into the PyTorch Foundation now determining how independent the project stays under new ownership.
Nscale agreed to acquire Anyscale, the company behind the Ray compute framework, in a deal Bloomberg valued at roughly $1.65 billion.
All of Anyscale's roughly 200 employees are moving to Nscale. The brand keeps operating instead of getting absorbed and renamed. For anyone building on Ray, that matters. The team behind it now works inside a company that owns the data centers and power plants underneath the compute, not just a tenant.
That direction is unusual. The typical story is a software company buying compute capacity. Here it's the reverse: an infrastructure owner buying the developer-facing software layer that sits on top of it.
Ray's governance doesn't move in-house. Nscale says it will join the PyTorch Foundation, where Ray has been governed since October 2025, rather than pull the project under its own control.
One thing worth watching: whether Nscale starts pricing Ray-based workloads differently on its own infrastructure than on competitors' clouds. Or whether it leaves the framework's open governance untouched and competes on hosting quality alone.
