The open-source Jira alternative ships its Claude and Cursor agent instructions as public repo files, not local dotfiles.
Why now: Kaneo's 496-star jump was recorded on Aug. 3, with the skills directories already live in the repo.
Kaneo checks .agents/skills, .claude/skills, and .cursor/rules directories into its GitHub repo, publishing the AI instructions it wants Claude and Cursor to follow, per the repo.
That matters because those files travel with the code. They get reviewed in pull requests and inherited by anyone who forks the project, not left on one developer's machine.
Kaneo itself is a minimal open-source alternative to Jira and Linear. It's built on React, Hono, TypeScript, and PostgreSQL, and ships Docker, Kubernetes, and Helm chart configs for self-hosting.
The repo gained 496 stars in a single day, reaching 6,542 total stars, 537 forks, and 2,313 commits, per GitHub.
In my experience, most teams treat agent instructions like a .env file: personal, local, gitignored. Kaneo does the opposite, publishing the same instructions Claude and Cursor use on its codebase the way a project publishes a CONTRIBUTING.md for human contributors.
Kaneo's repo doesn't say why the team chose to publish these files instead of keeping them local, a gap in what's public.
