Alibaba's Qwen3.8 launched August 3 at $2 input, $6 output per million tokens, and r/singularity read it as a shot at Anthropic, per a 497-upvote thread.
Alibaba Model Studio lists the rate flat across the model's full 1M-token context, no window-size tiering. That's four days after OpenAI cut GPT-5.6 Luna pricing 80% to $0.20 input and $1.20 output per million, on July 30.
Two price moves landed four days apart, July 30 and August 3. The thread's title needles Anthropic's Dario directly: "Qwen 3.8 morning to you too Dario."
Nothing in the thread argues Qwen3.8 beats Claude on a benchmark. Just the invoice.
The evidence doesn't say whether Anthropic responded, or what its own price is. It only shows the community picked Dario by name as the reference point. OpenAI's July 30 cut is the other data point here, not proof Qwen3.8 undercuts everyone it's compared to.
Whether Qwen3.8 shows up in real API traffic in the weeks after August 3, or the 497 upvotes are the whole story, is the open question.
