The FTC banned imports of foreign humanoid, quadruped, and wheeled robots, citing national security and domestic supply chains, per MIT Technology Review. Ninety percent of recent robotics papers out of US universities relied on the now-banned hardware, according to the report. That means the rule hits research budgets before it touches any Chinese manufacturer's bottom line.
The price gap explains the dependency. A Unitree quadruped runs about $4,600. A comparable Boston Dynamics model costs roughly $278,000, per MIT Technology Review. Labs that built research programs around the cheaper hardware now have to find a domestic substitute or an exemption.
The rule reportedly carries many carve-outs. What that changes for a lab trying to buy a robot next semester isn't clear yet, per the report.
I think the carve-outs are the real story. A ban this loaded with exemptions reads less like an attempt to pull $4,600 quadrupeds out of American labs. It reads more like a message aimed at Beijing. I'd watch whether university procurement data shows any real drop in foreign hardware, or whether the exemptions swallow the rule entirely.
