The trick has no official docs, and the same author built ws-term to SSH into Claude's mobile-app cloud VM from a phone.
Why now: As of August 10, the r/ClaudeAI post's 286 upvotes make it an unusually prominent workaround with no official Anthropic documentation.
Claude Code users are handing grunt work to free open-source models through OpenCode, per a 286-upvote r/ClaudeAI post.
For builders hitting Claude's usage limits, the split matters. The open-source model does the bulk of implementation while Claude handles a frontier-quality cleanup pass.
OpenCode grants free tokens for open-source models, which is what makes the split possible. None of it appears in Anthropic's or OpenCode's own documentation.
The trick isn't free of tradeoffs. Its author says it's only worth doing near the token limit, because free models take longer to work bugs out than Claude does.
Claude Code's mobile app provisions a Firecracker VM for its cloud option. The same author built ws-term, a tool that lets them SSH into that VM from a phone.
Neither hack is about model quality. Both exist because Claude's usage limits bite, and free models are the workaround while builders wait for more capacity. If Anthropic ever ships a cheaper built-in tier, don't expect either trick to stick around.
