Microsoft's own MAI-Code-1.1-Flash shipped in the same release, two days before local runtimes could even run K3.
Why now: GitHub's changelog for the August 10 weekly release posted August 13, two days before local open-source runtimes matched K3 support at all.
GitHub rolled Kimi K3 into every Copilot tier in its August 10 weekly release, per the GitHub Changelog. Local open-source runtimes only merged support for the model on August 15, and none has shipped a tagged build yet. Copilot is now the fastest way for most developers to actually run it. Moonshot's open-weight model runs 2.8 trillion parameters across 896 experts, and until this release it sat behind the plan's top tiers.
The same release starts rolling out Microsoft's own MAI-Code-1.1-Flash, with native image understanding. The August 10 drop puts Moonshot's model and Microsoft's own model in front of subscribers at the same time.
Bundling a rival's model into every tier for free, right alongside its own new model, is a bet that distribution beats owning the model. Watch whether Moonshot's weights end up handling more of Copilot's daily coding traffic than MAI-Code. If it does, GitHub's bundling bet looks smarter than owning the model outright.
The changelog doesn't say why K3 skipped a usual top-tier-first rollout. It posted August 13, three days after the August 10 release it describes, and two days before local runtimes matched K3 support at all.
