Token use for the same tasks fell by half and full failures dropped to zero, with no retraining, per a new arXiv paper.
Why now: The round-by-round accounting comes from a new arXiv paper, 2608.11224, the most detailed report yet on how fast agent memory pays for itself.
A self-evolving memory framework cut an AI agent's failed answers from four to zero across three rounds, per a new arXiv paper.
For anyone rerunning the same tool-heavy workflow, that's four fewer wrong answers and half the token cost by the third pass.
The system logged each mistake as a fact, then skipped it next time, without changing a single model weight. The framework stores what it learns as inspectable facts and executable skills, not parameters. That record survives a swap to a different underlying model, the paper says.
On 49 real materials tool-use questions spanning 138 subtasks, equation-of-state outcomes started at 22 correct, 1 partial, and 4 failed. By round three that had become 25 correct, 2 partial, and zero failed.
Across 13 simulation workflows, token cost fell roughly in half and tool calls dropped more than 2x by the third attempt. The paper reports the setup avoided 92% of errors it had already made once. This is the clearest number I've seen on how fast a failure log pays for itself.
I don't know if the gains hold past round three, or outside materials tool-use tasks, since the paper doesn't say.
