Why now: The release landed August 22, one day before this briefing.
Microsoft shipped dotnet-1.19.0 of its Agent Framework on August 22, moving MCP long-running task support to a newer spec extension, per the release notes. The change, in PR #7774, targets the 2026-07-28 Tasks extension, the same version the MCP roadmap already treats as its baseline.
That's a breaking change, not an add-on. Anyone with agents on the old long-running task extension needs to check their pinned SDK version before upgrading.
PR #7564 adds an agent-hooks interception contract as an experimental first-class feature. It gives developers a supported way to intercept and modify agent behavior mid-run, instead of monkey-patching around it.
The release also adds Azure Blob Storage session persistence, session-persisted chat client routing, and Foundry hosted-agent state persistence. All three keep agent state alive across restarts and Azure's hosted surfaces.
The GitHub release doesn't say whether other MCP SDKs, in Python or TypeScript, have made the same jump to the 2026-07-28 Tasks extension. It also doesn't say whether Microsoft coordinated the timing with them. If you're running mixed-language MCP tooling, that's the gap to check before you assume compatibility survives the upgrade.
