A restricted four-cell AI system beat its fully visible twin by at least 20 points in nine of ten matched trials, per an arXiv paper.
The result matters for anyone wiring communication between AI components, since restricting visibility improved accuracy instead of hurting it here.
The setup is narrow by design. Four cells share one frozen pretrained model and a single low-rank adapter, so no cell gets its own weights. They communicate only through a fixed relay of two model-width continuous vectors. The researchers built ten matched pairs, one restricted arm and one globally visible arm in each. Every pair was identical down to initialization bytes, training order, token layout, parameter count and computation, except for the attention mask.
The restricted arm still missed the authors' own bar. They set a 0.70 floor for depth-three accuracy in advance, and the restricted arm landed at 0.6988, just under it. They report the miss themselves, in the same paper that reports the 20-point win.
Publishing a result that misses your own preregistered bar is rare, rarer than the 20-point win itself.
