The raise closed from an unplanned board meeting, and most of Rillet's 600 customers are switching from Oracle, NetSuite, SAP, Workday or Great Plains.
Why now: TechCrunch published the deal mechanics on August 21.
Rillet closed a $100 million Series C at a $1 billion valuation in 48 hours. The deal came out of a board meeting nobody called to raise money, per TechCrunch's follow-up.
Speed matters less than who's buying. Rillet has about 600 customers, and most are migrating off Oracle, NetSuite, SAP, Workday or Microsoft Great Plains. Those systems have resisted replacement for two decades.
ICONIQ led the round, Sequoia reinvested, and a16z stayed on the cap table, according to TechCrunch. Nobody went looking for a term sheet. The money arrived inbound.
Instead of layering automation onto NetSuite or Oracle, Rillet rebuilt the general ledger itself. That's a harder build than bolting on automation. It's also a bigger ask. Customers replace their system of record instead of saving a few hours a week. TechCrunch's report doesn't say what Rillet's close rate looks like against incumbents, or how long a typical migration takes.
A board meeting turning into a $100 million raise in two days says investors think this category is moving. Six hundred companies migrating off Oracle and SAP says the same thing from the buyer's side. If that migration pace holds beyond one hot company, expect incumbents to answer with acquisitions or AI ledger products of their own.
