InjecMEM corrupts an AI agent's memory with one ordinary interaction, no access to the memory store required, according to the arXiv paper describing the attack. Any agent that stores past interactions and reuses them for later answers is exposed. The store's access controls don't matter, because the attacker never touches them directly.
The method plants a memory record that pairs a retriever-agnostic anchor, tuned for high recall on the target topic, with a short adversarial command. The command comes from a gradient-based coordinate search, averaged across synthetic prompt templates and insertion positions. That averaging is what lets it work regardless of how the memory is phrased or where it sits in the record.
Once planted, the record steers the agent's future answers on related queries toward a pre-specified output. It survives memory drift and works across multiple memory systems and model backbones. Queries outside the target topic come back untouched. That gap makes the poisoning hard to notice.
