Gemma 4 31B, nearly the same size and Apache 2.0 licensed, released April 2, yet ranks 71 spots back in the same category.
Why now: Arena.ai's rankings were current as of August 25, 2026.
Qwen3.8-27B ranks #9 on the Code Arena WebDev leaderboard with 1595 points, per Arena.ai. It's the only model in its size class to crack the top 10, sitting six spots behind the far larger Qwen3.8-Max, which itself ranks third.
Gemma 4 31B, close to Qwen3.8-27B in parameter count, ranks #80 in the same category. Gemma is Apache 2.0 licensed and released April 2, about four months before this ranking. The distance between the two models is 71 places on one leaderboard, despite comparable size and a permissive license on Gemma's side.
That strength shows up outside web code too. It also ranks #6 in Consumer Product, #7 in Brand & Marketing, and #8 in Gaming, a spread across four categories total.
Neither model size nor license terms explain the 71-place split. Something in how each model handles the WebDev task itself is doing the work, and Arena.ai's post doesn't say what.
