Recent commits to the open TPU training framework cover checkpoint telemetry, preemptible capacity and IAM bindings alongside the model code.
Why now: The IAM binding fix and the Grafana repair are the latest entries in marin's commit history as of August 26.
Marin's commit log reads like an operations manual, not a research changelog. The open training project, marin-community/marin, has pulled 2,343 stars under an Apache-2.0 license. Its recent commits show what it costs to run a foundation-model job on TPU capacity that can be pulled out from under you.
Checkpoint telemetry from Levanter now publishes at each training phase. Commits added a merged cache catalog and let the TPU ferry launcher run on preemptible capacity, defaulting to the v6e chip. GCP IAM role bindings are now authoritative instead of advisory. Commits also repaired a broken vLLM Grafana overview.
None of that is the training algorithm. It's the eviction handling, the dashboard, and the access control a preemptible job needs to survive a mid-run interruption. Checkpoint telemetry shows where a run stopped, and the ferry launcher relaunches it on whatever capacity appears next.
Most public ML repos ship a model card and a training script, then stop. Marin publishes the auto-triage CI and the Grafana fix in the open too, alongside the model code.
